Echo Measurement Guide

Start here with this frame-by-frame guide to help with measuring a complete transthoracic echo.

Measurement labels outlined here in bold (i.e. IVSd) correspond to the abbreviations used in Phillips IntelliSpace reporting software.

Parasternal Long Axis

Parasternal long axis (increased depth)

Pericardial effusion

Pleural effusion

Parasternal long axis

IVSd (includes IVSd, LVIDd, LVPWd) at end-diastole

LVIDs at end-systole

Parasternal long axis (aortic valve focus)

Look for aortic regurgitation on colour Doppler

LVOT in mid-systole

Ao root diameter (leading edge to leading edge)

Asc aorta (often requires dedicated separate view)

Parasternal long axis (mitral valve focus)

Look for mitral regurgitation on colour Doppler

Parasternal long axis (RV inflow focus)

Look for tricuspid regurgitation on colour Doppler

CW Doppler – TR max V

Parasternal long axis (RV outflow focus)

Look for pulmonary regurgitation on colour Doppler

CW Doppler – PA V2 max

PW Doppler (at pulmonary valve) – PA accel
